The other day my husband and I were riding bikes when his eagle eye spotted a mulberry tree. He knows how I love mulberries. My great grandmother had one in her backyard. As kids we would climb it and pick those juicy berries all day, stained purple head to toe. Mulberries have a unique flavor. They’re juicy and definitely sweet, but they don’t have that zing that other berries have. They’re more mellow.
Toby has heard about grandma’s mulberry cake. The mulberries sink to the bottom to make this sweet berry goo. A warm vanilla sauce is spooned over the top. I think he was pretty determined to make it happen. Mosquitos started biting, but he kept on picking.
A few people drove by and asked what we were picking. He told them with a laugh, “I use these for fish bait.” He really wanted every last berry for himself.
