May is my favorite month of the year. I’m looking forward to fishing and snorkeling, spending evenings on the porch, and celebrating a few birthdays. I like making birthday cakes, but baking isn’t much fun when it’s really hot out, so I broke out the ice cream maker instead.

Banana Coconut Crumble Muffins
I baked these muffins for you.
Avocado, Grapefruit and Fennel Salad
This is my favorite Florida winter salad. The shaved fennel is a nice change from salad greens.
Hula Sunset
The tequila sunrise is one beautiful cocktail. It’s a combination of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine, which is served unmixed. The gradation of colors in the glass resemble those of a rising sun.
Black Sapote Mousse
Black sapote is a unique tropical fruit. It’s often called “chocolate pudding fruit” because the pulp is the color and texture of chocolate pudding. It’s a type of persimmon native to Central America. They grow in Florida, and you can find them at farmer’s markets from December-March.
Honeybell & Arugula Salad
Honeybells are the gem of Florida’s winter citrus crop. They’re tangelos, a cross between a tangerine and a pomelo. They’re sweet, juicy, and easy to peel.
Lemongrass and Ginger Tea
This tea has only two ingredients, but the simple combination of lemongrass and ginger is incredible.
Broiled Grapefruit
We used to have a grapefruit tree in our backyard. It was so big kids would climb it. It gave us so many grapefruit, the old-fashioned white ones. I ate them like oranges: peeled, biting into each juicy section over the kitchen sink to catch the drips.
