Smak and Crackers

Call it what you like.  Smoked fish dip.  Smoked fish spread.  Or, in my family, smak, an acronym from smoked mullet and kingfish.  Sometimes we also call it dinner.

Mango Mania 2015

Today is my last day as a Mango Mania champion.  Tomorrow a new winner will be crowned, and I’m sorry I won’t be there to pass the urn.  I’m missing out some incredible mango dishes, too.  

Key West Picket Fences

Key West is 4 miles long and 1 mile wide, and one big riot of color.  Quaint bungalows are painted Easter egg colors and tiny gardens overflow with vivid blooms.  It would be overwhelming without one important element:  the white picket fences.

Collard Kraut-chi

Fermented foods are healthy and delicious.  They’re the original probiotics, with living bacteria that create enzymes and add vitamins.  They also have a zingy flavor that’s addictive.  

Key West Cemetery

A hurricane in 1846 swept through the original beachside Key West Cemetery, leaving a gruesome scene in its aftermath.   It was relocated to the highest elevation in town.  Because of this, some gravestones are older than the cemetery itself.

Seminole Pumpkin Coconut Curry

Seminole pumpkins are really sweet.  Most of the traditional recipes I’ve found for them are desserts and breads.  I love pumpkin pie, but not so much in May.  

The Conch Republic In Bloom

There is so much in bloom this month in the Florida Keys.  Huge royal poincianas tower over the rooftops in vivid red, fuchsia bougainvilleas pour over fences, and gardens are filled with every color of plumeria.
